We will be working on our families bill of rights this weekend. The kids, ours, and the rules (laws) of the house.  I am hoping it will bring some peace to things. We began here at Kids Bill Of Rights, to  help give the kids ideas for their Bill of Rights.  It's amazing to think about how this original came to be.

Overheard in school today.

Harper:  "Mom you're knitting?! Do you want me teach you how to cast on."
Me:     "Yes, please"
Harper : "Don't forget this is practice"

Ryland  :  "Hey we all have penmanship, and writing. And everyone has Math."
Coulson:  "I bet everyone who is lucky enough to go to school has math."
Harper :  "People who home school are lucky."
Coulson : "Yeah they're the luckiest."

Harper : "Mom, 4/5 of my cards for the card exchange have water in them and
 2/5 have land in them."
Me:  "Umm honey....you might need to do the math on that one again."
Harper: "HUH?.......4 have water, 2 have land"
Me:    "You only have five cards"
Harper:   "One card has both."
Smirk and a walk away..... Ah yes the beginnings of a teenage mind.

For a day that began with me in a low energy,  lethargy mood,  wishing I could just pull up and go get haircuts for everyone and spend the day buying useless stuff at goodwill. The day had a storybook hour and half.  It was only a short moment but it helped me tremendously. I am in the Feb. doll drums, I need a spring  garden and a total house re-do.  Perhaps an eclipse. Maybe if the laundry was done? Nah......I just need to hang on to those clips of joy until March.

Okay May.

Okay so it turns out that you should not share your crappy homeschool moments with your husband as he is walking in the door.  Turns him against everyone.  I am going to try not to be one of those teachers who sends home pissy na-na-na notes everyday it.  With all of the discrepancies and he/she spoke out of turns.  And Johnny bit Sally's in it. What happens in homeschool just like "go to" school stays at school. End of story.

So on that note I have not enjoyed the last couple of days. I've marked my calender to see if perhaps there is a correlation. Uh hum.  I also need to turn away from doing this for my husband. Whether I like it not I need him to see we are doing stuff. Like somehow I'm going to fail to instill knowledge in his/our children and they will flounder for life because of me.  By the by the awesome "responsibility" of homeschool is over played. I'm not going to fail anyone. But sometimes I do feel my dh looking at me like WHAT did you do today. As though everyday must be full of some accomplishment.  So that stresses me a bit. I'm learning too after all.

There won't be a year as hard as this one. I just need to slow down and find my peaceful side. Hmm .

Today was such an I wish they went to public school day. All the wacky questions and all the glazed over looks.  It helps to have photos like these around to remind me they are not evil.

Tomorrow I will find out something wonderful and enjoyable out about this adventure. Today was a day to remind me we are all human and sometimes we just need to chill.  And maybe lay off the coffee. Perhaps I should put some in the cereal.

The joy of a rainbow when magnified through the eyes of a child, is immeasurable. Standing in the cold and mist in our bare feet we stood in wonder and stared at the evening sky. Finally chilled to numb we rush in to our "Handy Science Answer Book" to find out why.  WHY???  The recurrent question of children.  Why does a fire smoke? Why can't I float in the bath tub? Why does the toaster make the perfect toast when you press two twice but not when you press four once (answer not found in science book).  The questions are delightful and dumbfounding in their scope.  I don't know have the answer to most of them.

It's been a weekend of fire pits and bamboo huts. Thanks in no small part (all part really) to my dear husband who let me hire someone to tend to our crazy yard. Yes that money could be going to our retirement. But right now it is going to sanity and a lower copperhead count. It can not be underestimated how they have transformed our yard in two visits. Now the regular tasks of our crazy too big yard don't seem so overwhelming. The whole weekend spent outside exploring and finding out how hot dog buns with and with out ketsup burn in a fire.  We are rested and the better for it.

That collective sigh you feel, that's the sound of school starting up again.

Even at home we felt the lack of structure. Manic children crazy nutty adults.
The children require so much rhythm in their day. The drum beat of going
to school,  the snack, the play etc. Even homeschoolers need that rhythm, that succinct
tick of the day. We have bickered and fought until we are blue. watched enough
TV and eaten enough garbage.
So that even I sigh and look forward to our routine. With all of it's hard work.
My job is to have their environment ready and that's a tall order.
Harper needs a quiet place with no distractions, Cole needs to be challenged, Ryland needs to read, Simon needs to destroy. They need me to have snack ready and the table clear so that our minds can be peaceful. I need to have at least looked at the work I am giving them. Not that I have but I need to.  We begin our specials today. Art, Latin, Cooking and Piano. I am overwhelmed by the thought of teaching them everything. I have to remember they are young and will be learning for the rest of their lives.
At least I got the shelves set up.
